마흐무드 아부 하쉬하쉬의 편지를 받은 후
아래와 같은 답장을 보냈습니다.
참고로, 편지 내용은 이영주 시인이 작성한 것입니다.
아부의 메일박스가 풀이어서 여러 번 반송된 끝에
오늘에야 답장이 왔습니다.
아부의 답장과 함께 올려드립니다.
이건 우리가 마흐무드에게 보낸 편지입니다.
We were very pleased to read your touching letter.
Korean writers have read your letter together as well as young writers.
We thank you from the bottom of my heart to meet the pure hearted same mind dream of making a beautiful world beyond the racial feeling and an area.
We couldn't have realized the life, the youthfulness, the spirit and the true sorrow of Palestine in a concrete way without you.
It goes without saying that we were impressed deeply by Zakaria showed us the stream of the history and the literature of Palestine like a stout pillar.
It's as good as you showed us the positive future of Palestine through the sparklike of life.
Korea and Palestine left an unforgettable impression behind upon this opportunity.
Now, we'll become intimate more and more and keenly realize the being each other.
We'll be accompanied by you for making of the peaceful world where nobody weep out, as you say that we are very close spiritually.

당신이 한국의 작가들에게 보내준 감동적인 편지 잘 받았습니다.
젊은 작가들 뿐만 아니라 한국의 모든 작가들은 당신의 편지를 함께 읽었습니다.
인종도 지역도 다르지만 아름다운 세상을 꿈꾸는 순결한 영혼의 젊은 동지를 만난 것에
깊이 감사하고 있습니다.
우리는 당신이 아니었다면 팔레스타인의 생명과 젊음, 패기와 그 안에 고인 깊은 슬픔에 대해 구체적으로 느끼지 못했을 것입니다.
든든한 버팀목처럼 팔레스타인의 역사와 문학의 흐름을 보여준 자카리아와 생생한 생명력을 통해 팔레스타인의 적극적인 미래를 보여준 당신에게 깊은 감명을 받은 사실은 두말할 필요도 없겠지요.
이번 기회를 계기로 서로에게 깊은 인상을 남긴 한국과 팔레스타인은 이제 문학을 통해 서로의 존재감을 깊이 느끼고 더더욱 가까워질 것입니다.
당신의 말대로 정신적으로 너무나 가까운 거리에 있는 우리들은 그 누구도 울지 않는 아름다운 세상을 위해 당신과 함께 할 것입니다. 건강하시길 빕니다.
(이렇게 쓰고나서 아래에 약간의 사족을 붙였더랬습니다.
그것도 공개를 해야 하나....? 뭐, 하겠습니다.)

I'm Sue who was harassed by poor English in Jeju island.
I must apologize to you that could not convey your meaning exactly.
This letter conjures up memories of the good days in Jeju.
I wish you every happiness!
그러니까, 제주도에서 형편없는 영어로 너를 괴롭혔던 수우(김서령)다,
그래서 좀 미안했다, 잘 지내라.... 뭐 이렇게 짧게 덧붙였습니다.
답장은 이렇게 왔습니다.
Dear Sue,
It is great to hear from you.
Thanks a lot for your beautiful words, and for sending the photos that recall good times in Jeju. Of course I remember you, and I hope you are doing great. Whenever I hear from Korea I feel all my memories there are refreshed and become more tangible. Photos help us construct the memories in time and space and keep the past moments imprinted in our faces and eyes, and it is the resposibilty of poetry to capture what the photo can’t capture, and I hope one day I will be able to write about such moments.
I hope you stay in contact.

너로부터 소식을 듣게 되어서 기쁘다.
너희의 아름다운 글과
제주에서의 즐거웠던 시간을 되새기게 해준 사진들을 보내준 것 너무 고맙다.
물론 너를 기억하고 있으며, 네가 잘 지내고 있길 바래.
한국에 관한 소식을 들을 때마다
나의 모든 기억들이 새로워지고 더욱 또렷해지는 걸 느껴.
사진들은 그 시절 우리들의 기억을 구성해주고
우리의 얼굴과 눈 속에 지나간 시간을 각인해 놓는다.
그건 사진이 잡아내지 못하는 것들을 잡아내야 하는 시의 책임이기도 하지.
그리고 나는 언젠가 그런 순간들에 대해 글을 쓸 수 있길 소망한다.
종종 연락할 수 있길.
따뜻한 관심과 간절한 소망을 담아서 마흐무드 보냄.
