Grants for Korean Literary Works Translation & Publication for 2005

 
“민족문화 창달”과 “한국문학의 세계화”를 추진하고 있는 대산문화재단은 한 민족의 정서이자 정신적 뿌리인 우리 문학을 세계화하고 문화교류를 증진하기 위해 한국문학작품의 번역과 출판을 지원합니다. 우리 문학의 번역지원은 세계화할 가치가 높은 작품을 선정, 번역하여 해당 언어권의 유수한 출판사에서 출판, 보급시켜 한국문학의 세계화를 촉진하려는 사업입니다. 특히 올해부터는 번역인들의 충분한 번역활동을 돕기 위해 번역지원금을 대폭 증액하고 출판지원제도를 신설하였습니다. 대산문화재단은 교보생명보험주식회사를 일으킨 대산 신용호선생의 뜻에 따라 교보생명의 출연으로 설립되었습니다.

The Daesan Foundation was established in 1992 by the generous donation of Mr. Yong Ho Shin (honorific name Daesan, great mountain), founder and honorary chairman of Kyobo Life Insurance Co., Ltd., to promote globalization of Korean literature and to enrich Korean culture. The Foundation is supporting translation of Korean literary works and their publication overseas. The Foundation invites application for grants by able translators and awards them to selected applicants. There is a separate partial grant to overseas publishers undertaking publication of translation works completed under this grant. The following is the guidelines in submitting applicants for grants.
 

1. 지원부문 Project Categories

가. 번역지원(출판지원 포함) Translation (including publication grant)

 1) 번역을 희망하는 한국문학작품의 외국어 번역(본 재단의 /'/번역대상작품 선정위원회/'/에서 선정한 번역대상작품 목록을 제공함)

 Translation of Korean poetry, fiction or drama. (The Foundation has a list of works recommended for translation selected by an advisory committee)

 2) 제 11회 대산문학상 수상작의 외국어 번역

Translation of prize-winning works from the 11th Daesan Literary Awards:

· 시『처음 만나던 때』 김광규 作 Poetry: Cheo-um Man-na-deon Ddae by Kim Kwang-Kyu

· 소설 『사람의 향기』 송기원 作 Fiction: Sa-ram-ui Hyang-gi by Song ki-Won

나. 출판지원 Publication

 - 번역을 완료한 한국문학 작품의 출판비만 지원

Publication grant for fully translated Korean literary works (excluding translation grant)

2. 지원어권 Target Languages

 - 영어, 불어, 독어, 스페인어 English, French, German, and Spanish

3. 신청자격 Qualification of applicants

 1) 한국문학작품을 외국어로 번역할 수 있는 번역인으로서 한국인과 외국인의 공동 번역이 가능한 사람.

Full linguistic command of Korean and the target language and literary/critical sensibility necessary for literary translation.

 2) 한국인과 외국인 가운데 한쪽이 주번역 다른 한쪽이 보조번역(교열, 윤문)이 가능한 사람.

The translation should be a team effort of at least one Korean and one native speaker of the target language, and one member of the translation team should act as its leader,in whose name the application is submitted, to whom the entire grant is made, and who signs the contract agreement with the Foundation.

 3) 외국인과의 공동번역으로 한국문학 작품의 번역을 완료하고 출판을 준비 중인 사람

The person who is preparing publication of Korean literary works after finishing translation with native speaker

4. 지원대상자 Number of grants

 - 언어권별 약간 명 Several in each of the target languages

5. 지원금 Amount of grant



 가. 번역지원금 Translation Grant

 - 각 1천5백만원 (번역 완료 후 출판시 출판비용의 일부를 별도 지원함) 15,000,000 won per project (excluding publication grant)

 나. 출판지원금 Publication Grant

 - 작품 및 현지 출판실정에 따라 책정함. earmark a sum of grant upon works and situation of publication

6. 신청기간 Application Period

 - 2005년 2월 21일(월) - 5월 31일(화) Feb. 21. ∼ May 31. 20045

7. 제출서류 Documents required for application

 1) 번역 원고(번역희망 작품 또는 대산문학상 수상작을 일정량<A4용지 20-30장 분량> 이상 번역한 원고)

Sample translation (20∼30 A4 pages of sample translation of the work(s) to be translated)

 2) 번역 대상 원작(번역 대상 작품 또는 번역한 부분의 사본)

The original (either the complete work or a photocopy of the portion translated in the sample)

 3) 번역(출판)지원 신청서(소정양식)Application form

 4) 공동신청자 이력서(소정양식)R&eacute;sum&eacute; of the co-worker

 5) 번역(출판)계획서(작품선정 경위, 번역일정, 출판예정사 및 출판계획 등 상술, 소정양식)

Translation project and time plan (the reasons for selecting the work(s), gains to be expected from publication of the translated work(s), time schedule of translation, publication plans, etc.)

 6) 원작자 동의서(대산문학상 수상작 제외)

Statement of consent from the original author(s) allowing the translation and publication ofhis/her/their works by the applicants(except works awarded the Daesan Literary Award)

 7) 참고 및 증빙자료

Other samples and references which may be helpful to the screening committee in judging the applicants/'/ qualification, such as published translation works and their critical reviews

 8. 선발 및 결과발표 Screening process and announcement of selection

 1) 본 재단에서 위촉, 구성한 심사위원회에서 번역신청서, 번역원고, 번역계획서, 참고자료 등을 심사하여 선발함.

 The screening committee will consist of scholars of Korean and pertinent foreign literatures.

 2) 심사의 주요기준▲제출한 번역원고에 따른번역자의 번역능력▲원작의 문학성 ▲번역계획의 완성도 ▲출판예정사의 가능성 또는 기대치 등

Criteria for selection: ▲ the applicants/'/ translation skill as demonstrated in the sampletranslation ▲ the literary merits of the work(s) to be translated ▲the feasibility of translation and publication plans ▲the likelihood of reaching a publication contract with the publisher designated on the application form

 3) 결과발표 : 2005년 8월중 재단 홈페이지 및 개별 통지

Date of announcement : winners of the grant will be notified on the web and individually in August, 2005.

- 기한 내에 방문 또는 우편으로 제출하여야 하며 우편접수의 경우 등기우편을 이용하여야 함.

 The above documents and materials should be submitted to the Foundation headquarters by registered mail or in person.

- 필명으로 신청한 경우에는 반드시 본명을 병기하여야 함.

 If the applicants are using pen names, their legal names should be clearly notedon application

10. 지원금 지급 Awarding of grants

 1) 확정된 지원금은 금융기관 송금방식에 의해 분할 지급함.

The award will be deposited into the team leader/'/s bank account.

 2) 번역지원금은 2회 분할하여 번역착수시 50%, 번역이 완료된 후 심의위원회의 심의를 거쳐

잔액 50%를 지급함.

The translation grant will be awarded in two parts, half of it immediately after the announcement, and the remainder after the completed translation is submitted and the evaluation committee approves the quality and accuracy of the translation.

 3)출판지원금은 재단과 출판사간 출판계약 체결 후 출판사에 분할 지급함.

The publication grant will be awarded in two parts according to the contract.

11. 중간보고서 Interim Report

 - 번역지원을 받은 사람은 번역지원금 수령일로부터 6개월 이내에 번역진행상황에 관한

 중간보고서를 소정양식에 따라 제출하여야 함.

Grant recipients are required to submit interim reports on the progress of their translation within six months after receiving the first installment of the grant.

 12. 번역결과물

 The rights and obligations of the grant recipients regarding their finished translation work(s) include :

 1) 번역 결과물의 모든 권리는 원작자 또는 원작자와의 협의내용에 따라번역자에 있음.

단, 본 재단은 번역결과물 및 보고서를한국문학의 세계화와 민족문화 창달을위한 간행물발간 등에 사용할 수 있음.

The copyright of the translation work(s) belongs to the translator or the author, or jointly, according to the translation agreement between the author and the translator(s). However, the Foundation reserves the right to publish the translation work(s) and the translators/'/ final reports in its own publications for the purpose of promoting international recognition of Korean literature.

 2) 번역결과물은 당 재단 심의위원회의 심의를 거침.

The completed translation work(s) will be examined by an evaluation committee.

 3) 번역 결과물은 해당언어권의 출판사에서 출판하며 번역자는 현지출판을 위한 출판사 섭외, 교열(윤문) 등에 적극 협조하여야 함.

The translation work(s) should be published in the country of the target language, and translators should make all-out efforts to secure a reputable publisher. The grant recipients should also cooperate with the publisher in proofreading and doing other matters related to the publication of their works.

13. 지원 대상자의 의무

Unforeseen contingencies, changes in plan and acknowledgement of financial support in the published work :

 1) 지원을 받은 사람은 지원 기간 중 사고, 질병 등의 신상변동 사항이 있어 정상적인 번역이 곤란한 경우, 본 재단에 서면으로 보고하여야 함.

If any illness, accident, or contingencies arise to prevent the grant recipients from fulfilling the terms of their contract, they should notify this information to the Foundation in writing.

 2) 지원을 받은 사람은 도중에 번역 대상작품을 변경할 수 없음.

단, 번역 추진과 관련하여 일정 및 내용변경이 불가피하거나 꼭 필요하다고 인정되는 경우 재단의 사전 승인을 얻어야 함.

Grant recipients should not change the works to be translated without prior approval ofthe Foundation. If alteration and/or adjustment of the translation project becomes necessary, grantees should obtain prior approval from the Foundation.

 3) 번역은 지원기간(1년)내에 완결하여야 함. 단 사전협의에 의해 필요가 인정될 경우,1년에 한해 연장이 가능함.

The period of translation should not exceed one year. However, if the translator requests extension and the Foundation agrees, one-term extension of one year may be allowed.

 4) 출판시, 해당작품에 본 재단의 번역지원을 받아 번역, 출판되었음을 표기하여야 함.

The Foundation/'/s financial support should be clearly acknowledged in the published books.

 14. 기 타 Miscellaneous Information

 1) 제출한 서류와 작품은 반환하지 않음.

Application forms and materials submitted to the Foundation may not be returned.

 2) 지원이 확정된 후 다음 각호에 해당하는 사유가 발견되거나발생하였을 경우에는 본 재단 이사장의 권한으로 확정된 번역지원금의 지급을 취소, 중단하거나 이미 지급한 지원금의 전부 또는 일부를 반환하게 할 수 있음.

If the following cases arise, the Foundation reserves the right to cancel or suspend the grant, and/or demand the return of all or part of the grant already awarded.

가. 신청 또는 보고사항에 허위사실이 발견되었을 때

If an erroneous information has been discovered in the application or supporting materials.

나. 지원금을 목적 외에 사용하였을 때

If the grant recipients are found to have used the grant for purposes other than those specified in their contract.

다. 목적달성이 불가능하다고 인정될 때

If fulfilling the terms of the contract becomes impossible.

라. 번역결과물에 대한 심의 결과 번역수준이 현저히 떨어진다고 인정될 때

 If the translation is deemed substandard by an evaluation committee.

마. 기타 부당하다고 인정되는 행위가 발견되었을 때

If the grant recipients are found guilty of a misdemeanor.

 3) 본 요강에 명시되지 않았거나 기타 필요한 사항은 본 재단의 정관 및 제규정이 정하는 바에 따름.

Other contingencies not specified in this guideline will be dealt with in accordance with the Foundation/'/s by-laws and rules.

 4) 기타 자세한 사항은 본 재단으로 문의 바람.
